6 Days in Bolivia Itinerary

I’m absolutely so ecstatic to share my 6 days adventure in the world’s highest city. It’s about 13,000 feet or so above sea level.

Day 1: December 17, 2023 in📍La Paz

⚪️Speaking from experience, for those holding a Canadian and/or American Passport, a visa is required to enter Bolivia. A visa is attainable at the airport; the process was insane. Haha!

⚪️Since I was traveling solo, I was asked to provide proof of where I was staying each night, how I was traveling between cities La Paz and Uyuni, tour companies I was using in Uyuni and my return ticket back to North America.

⚪️The altitude was intense; I was given a mini oxygen tank to carry around just in case

Stayed in a private room in Wild Rover’s hostel from 10am thru 8pm and rested; thought this would help with the altitude.

😊Took a private bus from La Paz’s bus terminal going to Uyuni at 9pm. I used Cisne bus company; they picked me up from the hostel. The ride was 9 hours.

Day 2: December 18, 2023 in📍Uyuni

⚪️En eh ehh! I wanna tell y’all I climbed almost 12,000 feet above sea level in the Andes to visit the Uyuni Salt Flat. Oh my, the extreme high altitude made me tremble with weakness, but I could not walk away…

⚪️History say it’s a dried-up, prehistoric lake on the world’s largest salt flat.

⚪️So I travelled with 6 other adventurous travelers to this world’s most fascinating locations in the journey of a lifetime.

Tour Group

It’s one of the remotest regions on Earth. I wonder if space saw me…no joke, the Uyuni Salt Flat can be seen from space…

⚪️The Salar de Uyuni or some call it the Uyuni Salt Flats offers an unforgettable experience at any time of year; but I choose to visit during the dry season.

⚪️It’s a must to travel with a group tour; it’s best to do a 3 day tour. I booked in advance with @skyline_traveller and I toured with fun travelers from Germany, Holland, Poland and America.

⚪️So much enjoyed walking, dancing, attempting to drive, hiking amongst the cactus, having lunch in a salt restaurant, watched the sunset and have beautiful thoughts on this vast white, glistening and extraordinary salt stretching about 6,000 miles.

⚪️FYI, I read there is an estimated 10 billion tonnes of salt here. So under the salt surface, about 70% of the world’s lithium reserves can be found. That stuff is responsible for powering our laptops and smartphones and other electronic gadgets y’all and plays a big part in the Bolivian economy and locals lives.

Salar de Uyuni

Day 3: December 19, 2023 in📍Siloli Desert

⚪️By Day 3, my body, mind, energy and attitude was gradually adapting to the extreme high altitude in Bolivia.

⚪️And we started our day driving through the Siloli desert. It’s the highest desert altitude wise in the world.

⚪️Had a delightful opportunity to spend three days with Cristian from @skyline_traveller and the crew. He was our driver, professor/tour guide, comedian, chef, planner, protector and he ensured we all had the best experiences here in Bolivia. I don’t think l’ll ever forget his genuine enthusiasm and kindness towards me on this journey.

⚪️We enjoyed lunch with a view of the most gorgeous snow-laden volcanoes, pretty flamingos and high-altitude lakes.

Siloli Desert

⚪️We saw stunning rock formations and unique desert wildlife such as capybaras and guanacos. Pardon me, but they looked juicy.

⚪️We ended the night by having fine wine, delicious dinner and good conversation in a hostel in the desert. I stayed in a corner private room as I enjoyed my last night in Uyuni.

Day 4: December 20, 2023 in📍Uyuni

⚪️Explored the natural thermal spring surrounded by large active volcanoes. It’s so therapeutic and relaxing.

Natural Thermal

⚪️…simple people especially the Bolivians floor me…simplicity, humility, kindness, and generosity of heart are rare qualities…

⚪️…on my last evening in Uyuni, I enjoyed my time doing simple things like watching the sunset followed by having a simple meal in a simple local restaurant…

⚪️This has to be one of my inquisitive journey where I travelled into our earth’s core inner strength to meet a few geysers.

⚪️Our meeting was at 5AM (so early) on a cold December day in year 2023. The temperature was -5°C at an altitude of 4900m.

⚪️Being able to see these water eruptions exploding under heat pressure from the earth is unbelievable. If you get a bit too close, you can feel the steam sprinkling on you; please don’t jump in. Haha! But, as soon as the sun appears, the vapor from the geysers loses its power and becomes softer.

Geyser

⚪️Although it smelled like rotten eggs. The experience was unreal. I loved every moment of it. My brother and I tried assimilating geysers in our kitchen in our childhood days; that got us in trouble. lo!!! You too can try it; things are more sophisticated now I suppose.

Day 5: December 21, 2023 in📍La Paz

⚪️Took a half day tour to visit Tiwanaku with a local Bolivian tour guide from @viatortravel.

⚪️Tiwanaku is one of the oldest Ancient civilization in South America and it’s located about 13,000 feet above sea level near lake Titicaca.

⚪️It’s my favorite location on earth cause it’s so mysterious; there are so many unanswered questions – archeologists are still trying to figure out who built this city and why was it built in such a challenging and isolated area in the Andes mountains.

⚪️It’s interesting there are just these gigantic blocks of rocks lying around that’s just filled with mystery.

Tiwanaku

⚪️Most of the rocks were shaped uniquely. It seems like high ancient technology was used to craft them.

⚪️It’s also so mind boggling to see the Egyptian influences in South America…I love the Egyptian history a lot.

Day 6: December 22, 2023 in📍La Paz

⚪️On my last day in La Paz, I took a private day tour to visit📍Lake Titicaca (highest lake altitude wise in the world) and📍Copacabana (a town in Bolivia).

⚪️I booked my tour through @viatortravel and I traveled with Grisela from 7 AM through 10 PM. We took a public bus from La Paz ➡️Copacabana➡️Bus ➡️to Lake Titicaca Boat to floating Island➡️Hiked to the top of the island. As you get higher, the air becomes thinner and your breathing can become challenging.

⚪️I took lots of breaks…It was a beautiful journey as I enjoyed the beautiful landscape of both Bolivia and Peru (Lake Titicaca is shared between these two countries), literally chilled in the Andes mountains (like that’s goal); had a taste of the Bolivian cultural experience, clean air and outdoor mystic vibe.

Lake Titicaca

⚪️Super thankful to have had this educational and fun experience with Grisela.

Tour Guide Grisela

Overall I had a great time exploring Bolivia. The culture is so diverse and rich.
